Francisco J. Samaniego received his
Ph.D. in
Mathematics from UCLA in 1971. He joined the UC Davis faculty in 1972,
following an NSF-sponsored postdoctoral year in the Department of
Statistics at
the Florida
State University.
Dr. Samaniego's research interests include
Mathematical Statistics, Decision Theory and the foundations of
Statistics. Many of his recent investigations have centered around the performance of Bayesian methods. He
also has a
long-standing interest in the fields of Reliability Theory, Survival
Analysis
and Sampling Theory. He has served as a consultant to the California
Departments of Conservation, Corrections, Education, Employment
Development and
Transportation. Much of his applied work deals with statistical modeling and inference in the fields of
Education,
Engineering and Public Health.
Dr. Samaniego is an elected Fellow of
the American
Statistical Association, the Royal Statistical Society and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and is a
member
of the International Statistical Institute. In 2002, he was awarded the
U C
Davis Academic Senate's Distinguished Teaching Award. He served as the
Theory
and Methods Editor of the Journal the American Statistical
Association in
2003 - 2005, and has been an Associate Editor of Naval Research
Logistics
since 1982. In 2004, he became the eighteenth annual recipient of the
UC Davis
Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement. Frank's
hobbies are
reading, golf and paddle tennis.
