Department LibraryIn 1979, when the Intercollege Division of Statistics was established, there was a small departmental library carried over from the mathematics department. Most of the current collection in the Statistics Library is the result of faculty donations over the past 30 years. In 1980, Professor George Allen Baker, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics, donated around 600 books and 23 journals, to which he maintained subscriptions to for the next fifteen years. In 1983, Mrs. Andrea Blum donated part of her late husband Professor Julius Blum's private library – Blum was the Chair of the Statistics unit when he passed away in 1982. The library is located at room 4229 on the 4th floor of the Mathematics Science Building. It currently contains approximately 700 books and 10 Journals. The topical range of the collection includes probability, statistics, pure and applied mathematics and quantitative aspects of subjects as diverse as Biology, Economics, Education, Management, Physical Sciences and Psychology. Although the library is small, it contains some quite valuable and useful volumes, including, for example, the “Proceedings of the Berkley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability". With the help of staff members and students, a catalogue is being created; students, researchers, and faculty members are encouraged to inquire at the department front desk regarding the availability of a specific title. The Statistics Library also serves as a meeting place for some of the departmental and graduate group/program committees. |
